Riot Fest is gearing up to be the best festival of 2017

If you haven’t already secured your tickets for Riot Fest 2017…what are you waiting for? When the festival was announced earlier this year…fans immediately began buzzing over this year’s bill. In April came the second-wave announcement, and to this already unbelievable list of artists, latest news confirms the return of DANZIG to be performing on Saturday’s line-up. 

The festival takes place mid-September, just over a month away… but event organizers are still working to make this years Riot Festival the event of 2017! It doesn’t get much better than a festival where you can enjoy legendary acts including Queens of the Stone Age, Wu-Tang Clan, Nine Inch Nails and Jawbreaker… pop/punk/emo favorites in Paramore, A Day To Remember, State Champs, Real Friends, Taking Back Sunday and so many more. 

The festival has announced their single day line ups, and general/VIP tickets (three day passes or single day entry) are still available! Don’t wait, grab your tickets before it’s too late! 

What sets Riot Fest apart from the several other music-festivals happening this summer? In addition to the unbeatable line-up of artists, there will also be a full-scale Carnival including all your favorite carnival games, the Hellzapoppin’ Sideshow Revue freak show and all the best food imaginable. Did we mention…food? 

This year, Riot Fest is also introducing… THE RIOT FEAST! Teaming up with the pop-up diner, Saved By The Max, you won’t want to miss out on this limited-time restaurant/bar in Chicago where the menu will be inspired by none other than Riot Fest itself! This carnival themed restaurant is serving up the food you dream about underneath their carnival decor. Rumor has it, some of the menu items include things like: TAKING BACK SUNDAES, a tribute to M.I.A. with BUCKY DONE DAIQUIRIS, PARAMOREOS, NEVER MIND THE CHICKEN, HERE’S THE FUNNEL CAKES and an ‘opener’ (their play on appetizers) called HAVE MERCY! Dashboard Confessional and The Rejects deliver everything you didn’t know you needed on a Friday night!

Several studies have outlined the benefits tied to Himalayan Salt Lamps: helping with anxiety, reducing stress, purifying, relieve migraines… these salt lamps have been sworn to boost moods, helping users live a happier life. Perhaps this is why Dashboard Confessional lines their stage with them? Perhaps they just enjoy the feng shui vibe. One thing we know for sure? When the Salt Lamps are brought out, paired with the calming aroma of lit incense (was it Sandalwood, boys?) — our lives are seconds away from getting a whole lot happier. 

It may be ironic, to boast about increase happiness while discussing bands that helped define “emo” as we knew and loved it. This is 2017, after all. And “emo” has gotten a whole lot brighter. 

In recent years, several memorable tours rocked the ‘emo community.’ Dashboard teamed up with Third Eye Blind in 2015, Jimmy Eat World and The Used headlined a Taste Of Chaos festival in 2016. Brand New made an epic comeback to feature The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me in full for a select lucky number of cities across the US. It seems as though even as our generation ages, one thing for certain: we’re all still just emo kids at heart, hopelessly waiting for My Chemical Romance’s reunion announcement… 

Until then, Dashboard Confessional has been doing a phenomenal job biding our time. Earlier this year, they announced they’d be teaming up with The All-American Rejects to give us an incredible experience and one absolutely unforgettable night, unlike any Dashboard performances you may have seen before. 

The tour kicked off in California, night two in San Francisco’s Masonic. They are joined on stage (for the first half of the tour) by The Social Animals — a newer band out of Duluth, Minnesota. Lead by lead vocalist Dedric Clark, these boys are gearing up to release their sophomore EP, coined Early Twenties due sometime this year and we cannot wait to hear it! Most impressive is their pluck to tackle on Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” which they adapt beautifully in the middle of their set. 

It doesn’t get much more emo than telling someone you are “crushed by a former love” and to “swing” from the tangled remains… but that’s exactly why we love The All-American Rejects and their first hit, which made it’s way to our airwaves way back in 2002. The band kicked off their set hard, inaudibly announcing: we’re back! And the crowd accepted them as if it hadn’t been a near five years since their last tour (okay, it wasn’t. Remember the Taste Of Chaos festival we mentioned from 2015? They were there. and AAR was as amazing as ever). 

Tyson Ritter flirted with the excited crowd, going from “Swing, Swing” to “Fallin’ Apart,” a track off of their 2008 When The World Comes Down which was an absolute delight to hear live as it’s always been one of our personal favorites! 

“How does it feelto be watching us as adults now?” Ritter teases the crowd, not being shy in the least bit with the hiatus The All-American Rejects took to focus on themselves. They return stronger than ever, having just put out two amazing new singles: “Sweat” and “Close Your Eyes,” both which made their second-ever live debut tonight. 

The band is full of smiles as they joke on stage that their own music is like a blast from the past, painting vivid pictures of college dorm walls (or even your bedroom at your parents… I was only 12 in 2002 when AAR first hit the scene) and days not forgotten. Tyson shares his own pang of nostalgia: a story of his first ever concert… The Anniversary with openers, Dashboard Confessional. The band powered through an amazing set list of all their best, including a song that many may have never heard of: “There’s A Place” off of the motion picture soundtrack for “Miss You Already” starring none other than Tyson Ritter himself. This beautiful, heartbreaking slow song was performed with palpable emotion from the band and fit right in with the general vibe of the evening. 

Oh, the salt lamps. 

After a short intermission, the stage is prepared for Dashboard in a similar fashion to those who have been lucky enough to see Dashboard Confessional perform before. Salt lamps are placed at the foot of where each of them is to stand, decorating the stage which features a vintage, pillowy looking backdrop. Tonight is by far the largest production we’ve had the pleasure of seeing Dashboard Confessional in… but here’s the thing about Dashboard Confessional: regardless of the venue, Chris Carrabba has an incredibly unique ability to make you feel as though you’re the only one there in the room being sung to. Take it from someone fortunate enough to have caught Dashboard at a number of events in the past few years: massive outdoor amphitheaters for the Taste Of Chaos tour, the small and intimate Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco or the even smaller Independent bar/venue where Carrabba played just months ago with his other project Twin Forks. It hardly matters the setting. Dashboard Confessional is committed to making each and every performance unique, personal and unforgettable. 

The band take the stage and show they’re not wasting time. They begin immediately with fan favorite, “Vindicated,” which we all know and love from the Spiderman soundtrack back in 2004. The show is begun in such a fashion that some three-thousand fans are singing along so loudly that Carrabba can take a step back from the microphone and allow the song to carry on flawlessly. Guitarist Armon Jay, bassist Scott Schoenbeck, and drummer Ben Homola each have such a memorable presence on stage, leaving no doubt in our minds that there is absolutely nowhere else these men would rather be, even as Chris informally addresses the crowd with a casual “hey… thanks for listening.” 

It wouldn’t be a Dashboard show without some one-on-one with Carrabba and he never fails to disappoint. He performs a few of Dashboard’s most memorable songs acoustically: “Ghost Of A Good Thing” and a new song titled “Heart Beat Here” which Chris has been playing experimentally recording the fans singing it back live, sharing his plans to include the fans on Dashboard’s newest upcoming album. 

“This next song’s about…” Carrabba is cut off by an enthusiastic fan screaming her heart out and jokes, “Oh yeah? I love that one!” He mimics, teasing how could she know and yet following it up with a smug…but totally suave and pulled-off grin, “Nah, you know [you love it]” before kicking off “The Places You Have Come to Fear The Most.”

The sentiment is never wasted with Carrabba who shares how grateful he is for the fans who have allowed him to be a part of something special. “And by that.. I mean you,” he says just before explaining his plans to mix the fans on “Heart Beat Here.” He shares that over the past year he’s been asking fans to sing along, for this experiment and if it sounds terrible… he promises it won’t be our fault. “I’ve heard it. It’s tremendous,” he says with a glimmer in his eye, and you know that he means it, singing his heart out to this new, intimate song. As he hits high notes many vocalists can only dream of and holds the notes in perfect pitch for well over a minute if not two. It’s as impressive as they come, enough to bring goosebumps and/or tears to those witnessing such raw and emotional talent. 

You guys wanna sing the lead? I’ll sing back up…

It is so apparent that tonight is for the fans. As the band joins Chris back on stage, they continue through their impressive nearly 20-year catalog of songs. With a single chord, the fans cheer for each and every song, one after another. The stage illuminates from purples to golds, looking regal and yet… as the band kicks off into “Remember To Breathe,” Carrabba is hardly shy as he sneaks in a Justin Bieber cover of “Love Yourself,” to the end of the song. 

The night is closed out by the one and only “Hands Down,” but not until after Carrabba has had the opportunity to gush about how important his band members are. “These are my friends… I dreamed of playing in a band with them for a decade. Every night is a dream. This is the best drummer and I can’t believe I’ve got him to be in my band,” he says in a full genuine confession, pointing back to Ben and taking moments to also mention how many bands Scott has been in, including The Promise Ring to which Carrabba says, “if you don’t know The Promise Ring, you’re not emo-ring correctly.” and of course, last but not least, AJ’s very own solo project by his own name which he recently released an album under Del Rio which deserves to be checked out here:

The Melvins walk us through Love and Death at a sold out show in SF!

The Melvins have hit the road in celebration for the release of their first ever (in twenty-five releases and thirty years!) double-feature album, A Walk With Love And Death. This week, they played a sold out show at San Francisco’s own Great American Music Hall with support from Spotlights for a sludge-filled bad ass evening. 

The 23-track release (which dropped July 7th via Ipecac) finds Buzz Osborne, Steve McDonald and Dale Crover stitching together two very distinct sides to the band’s music, i.e. Love and Death. As expected from a Melvin’s release, Death is at it sounds, the slow, heavy metal fans crave. The Love side is a score to the Jesse Nieminen directed self-produced short feature by the same name: A Walk With Love and Death. The band has described their project as one “giant, dark, moody, psychotic head trip” to which their show definitely lived up to! 

This sold out night began with high expectations: the walls of the Great American Music Hall were lined with custom Melvins poster, each unique and just grotesque and worthy enough to commemorate the evening. Spotlights warmed up the crowd — this trio a perfect companion with their own slow-tempo metal music with a twist: lead singer/guitarist and bass players Mario and Sarah Quintero founded the band amidst their marriage! Joined on stage by Chris Enriquez on the drums, these New York natives were a treat all the way on the California coast. 

The Melvins took the stage with no tricks, no gimmicks, no flashy lights. In fact, they performed the entire night with the same vibrant red-lighting, leaving us to believe it was a statement towards love and death. The band opened with Flipper’s Sacrifice played at a medium tempo, leading into several of their tracks throughout the years and an unexpected cover in the form of The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.”

It only took about three songs for the crowd to erupt to life, paying no mind to the small stage, fans were moshing/crowd surfing and coming in close proximity to kicking The Melvins themselves right in the cranium…and from the looks of it, The Melvins loved it, who fed off the energy to provide one epic show. All the while dressed impeccably for the occasion: Buzz in a be-dazzled mumu and Steve in a sleeveless fuzzy top with his accented golden, glitter guitar strap. Dale looked casual — but don’t let that fool you. He had Slyvester from the Looney Tunes helping him keep the beat on his drum kit.

Dashboard Confessional and The All-American Reject’s amazing co-headlining summer tour kicks off today in California!

We’ve all been anxiously awaiting new music from DC, whose last record was their 2009 Alter The Ending. Last year, we got the beautiful track “May,” but DC have been teasing new material on the road for some time now! Lead singer Chris Carrabba has been flirting with various outlets, taunting the fact that there is no “shortage of songs,” with a near 40 available to pick from for a new record.. on the other hand, Carrabba has said he’s still writing and intends to as long as inspiration still surrounds him! 

Sounds like Dashboard is gearing up for their best release yet. You can check out their 2016 track “May” down below. 

As for The All-American Rejects… who could miss the band’s return with their 10-minute short film premiering “Sweat” and “Close Your Eyes.” TWO of the six rumored brand new tracks. Who else is excited to sing along to the new taste of AAR? Who else can’t wait for the show and the chance to hear unreleased material from both bands?

Chris Hardwick’s ID10T Festival’s first year was a major success!

It seems nearly every week a new festival is announced — summer means weekends spent at your local amphitheater, hanging out with friends, enjoying good music — festival season is an absolute dream.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better, affectionately appointed ‘king of the nerds,’ Chris Hardwick went and announced his first ever ID10T Festival, which took place this last weekend in Mountain View at the Shoreline Amphitheater. Where else can you check in and experience a day packed with music, comics, comedy, live panels, the amazing creativity of the vendors, the Power Rangers, cosplay, and more? That’s right. You can’t. The ID10T Festival was the first of it’s kind, perfectly blending together all forms of media and entertainment in a way that made the two-day event fun for attendees whether they were coming for the music, the comedy, the comics… there was no way you could leave without enjoying something unexpected. 

The incredibly diverse crowd of festival-goers first gathered on Saturday, and the best way to explain the atmosphere was spoken by Hardwick himself. While on stage with one of the panels, he looked to his left to a sea of people happily buzzing around to ‘Exhibitor Village’ and ‘Artist Alley’ which featured pop-up shops from Aftershock Comics, Aspen, Boomi Studios, Howtoons, Skybound, Fez-O-Rama, Tinkertart, and so many more. Hardwick beamed from ear-to-ear as he shared with the crowd how much it meant for him to see his vision come to life, to see enthusiasts out there, doing as he intended, enjoying everything the ID10T Festival had to offer. 

The skilled combination of comics, comedy and live music left for a truly remarkable and unique experience. It was almost impossible to be able to fit everything in the two provided days, but believe us, we tried! Saturday kicked off early with a panel from the Mystery Science Theater 3000 gang, leading up to a packed stage for Con Man, The Magicians, Stan Against Evil, and Nerdist Live! panels. These blocks were amazing insight for fans to be able to get an inside look and have the opportunity to talk to the creators and stars — from SyFy’s amazing series The Magicians discussing the next season and explaining how on earth they come up with the hand gestures associated with spells and which of their costumes they wish they could keep (like Margo’s crown), or the star/creator of Stan Against Evil, Dana Gould playfully joking that he would leave if there was one more question about co-star John McGinley’s time on Scrubs

The day leads up to a live taping of Hardwick’s very own Nerdist podcast with co-hosts Jonah Ray and Matt Mira, where they joked about everything under the sun (a lot of self-pleasure) and opened up the floor for questions. A lot of eager fans shared their personal struggles and how much Nerdist meant to them, though some took to the microphone a bit differently, including one fan who bravely used the mic for his personal ID10T complaint line to Mr. Hardwick himself. The fan addressed the lack of communication with the comedy tent (the fact that it was limited seating and tickets were needed for entry), to which Hardwick had offered to personally take care of it… though there was no need. Generous crowd members quickly hurried to the boy behind the microphone, offering up spare tickets to allow him to catch those at the comedy show that night: Matt Brauger, Hampton Count, Greg Proops and Nikki Glaser… followed by a second show with Irene Tu, Dan Mintz, Jonah Ray, Michael Ian Black and Demetri Martin all hosted by April Richardson. 

While these activities may have wrapped up around 8pm, the festival was just getting started as the panel stage turned into the Mad Decent Dance Stage, hosting sets by John Beaver, Griffin, Jai Wolf and Madeon. EDM not your thing? Then you had the option to head over to Shoreline’s main stage to catch headliners Lord Huron, Ok Go and Weezer closing out night one. 

Day two of the ID10T festival seemed even more successful than the previous — the panel stage never had an empty seat (and barely any available standing room) for Sunday’s guests: Futurama, Animaniacs Live!, Portlandia and Harmontown. The voice actors from Futurama (Phil LaMarr, Billy West and Maurice LaMarche) shared what it was like to be part of such an influential animated series, including tidbits about the Harvard-graduate written scripts and table reads that would bring them to tears (anyone remember Futurama’s infamous dog episode?). Animaniac voice actor Rob Paulsen, Maurice LaMarche and musician/lyricist Randy Rogel took the stage with a standing ovation as they performed renditions of memorable songs from the animated series produced by Steven Spielberg back in the ‘90s, including everyone’s favorite, “Yakko’s World.” As they closed with this performance, Paulsen gushed with admiration for Rogel, who auditioned for the show with the very same track, to which LaMarche happily boasted over his friend that it only took Paulsen a single take for the vocals to be tracked for the show. Such incredible insight for fans who grew up with “Yakko’s World” and other Animaniac moments constantly stuck in their heads!

The energy remained at an all time high for Portlandia stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein’s discussion of their hit show as they shared some of their favorite past moments, Fred’s happy decision to cut out facial hair from his characters and answered some pretty deep questions from the fans (including; “Are you happy?”). Harmontown closed out the panel stage with a live taping of their podcast, where Dan Harmon pushed the limits with his jokes, danced to some EDM lighting with the commentary and co-hosting Jeff Davis (Whose Line Is It Anyway) and Spencer Crittenden before a very real, and very special session of Dungeons and Dragons went underway. 

Comedians Natasha Muse, Marcella Arguello, Yassir Lester, Brian Posehn and the comedic/folk duo Garfunkel & Oates performed the first comedy set of the night — where Adrian McNair, Brent Weinbach, Mike Phirman and Michael Che closed out the comedy tent for good. Chris Hardwick made a surprise stop-in both days, sharing his jokes on parenting and even poking fun at the bumps to be expected with his festival’s first year. 

Sunday’s musical acts included Wax Motif, Party Favor, Troyboi and Zeds Dead at the Made Decent Dance Stage and headliners Animal Collective, TV On The Radio and Girl Talk — who turned Shoreline’s MainStage into one epic dance party. Whether you prefer the indie-rock/alternative or the ever-increasing energetic electro-house/EDM sets, there was no way you could be disappointed with the seamless blend the ID10T festival had to offer. 

Just how did Hardwick do it? It hasn’t been too uncommon this year for massive festivals to be announced (Fyre Festival, Karoondinha) and canceled due to their over-ambitious nature. Chris Hardwick has proved he was able to unveil the secret to success. With focuses on every major media out there, the ID10T Festival pulled off an amazing weekend that offered everything and more without overwhelming concert-goers. Of course, this isn’t to say there isn’t room for improvement, but we’re confident that Hardwick is already hard at work to make next year’s ID10T even better than the first, and already, we can’t wait!

Mr. Big defies Gravity and sets expectations high for rock ‘n’ roll with new album

Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan, Pat Torpey and newcomer, Matt Starr of supergroup Mr. Big (which formed in 1987) prove once again that they have no intention of slowing down as they release their new record titled Defying Gravity! The album was recorded in a live studio setting; meaning no overdubbing, presenting the intimate feel as though you’re experiencing them live. The guys managed to record the twelve featured songs in just six days! That’s crazy!

What can you expect from this 6-day fiasco? A masterpiece unlike any Mr. Big album before. The overall sound of Defying Gravity is the classic Mr. Big rock ‘n’ roll sound we all know and love paired with the down and dirty blues with a splash of R&B/soul. Add in some humor and references to the past thrown into the mix.

Now don’t freak out thinking that the guys have gone off the track. They haven’t. They are still the same Mr. Big we have known through the last 25 years. Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert are still shredding their guitars ’til their fingers bleed! Pat Torpey and Matt Starr are creating new recognizable rhythmic beats, and Mr. ‘Singer Dude’ Eric Martin pulling it all together with his killer vocals! 

Speaking of references to the past, a single titled “1992” that has been blowing up the internet, directly references Mr. Bigs hit single “To Be With You” which reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100! “1992” was written by Paul Gilbert who also wrote Mr. Big’s single, “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind” which reached #3 on the Billboard Top 100. In addition, “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind” was one of the first songs Paul Gilbert wrote that was featured on a Mr. Big album. Listening to “1992” brings me back in time, both hearing the lyrical references to “To Be With You” and the musical style of “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind.”

After listening to the whole album, one song that sticks out to me as a hit is “Nothing Bad (Bout Feeling Good).” It’s a groovy kind of sing-along with an easy chorus to remember. It has killer harmonies and guitar riffs. There is a distinct difference between the verse and chorus in the song which showcases Mr. Big’s musical knowledge and complexity. I still can not get over how much I love the guitar arrangements on this song! 

Now, of course, Mr. Big delivered a ballad for all the girls out there called “Forever And Back.” When I first listened to this song, all I wrote in my notes was BALLAD. What else could you expect from Mr. Ballad who sang his heart out on numerous heart-wrenching songs throughout the years? You can not tell me lyrics like “I’ve been a fool to my princess” or “Then would you say that you love me?” don’t pull at your heart string. “Forever And Back” really showcases Eric Martin’s amazing vocals and the guys’ harmonies. Mr. Big seals the deal ending with “I promise to love you forever, forever and back”.

A personal favorite of mine is the impressive, seven-minute long “Be Kind.” This song is that down and dirty blues meets R&B/soul referenced early in all of its glory. It also nicely showcases the talents of each member. You can’t go wrong with a minute long outro from these guys. “Is that too much to ask?”

All in all, Defying Gravity is a solid album leaving very little to be deserved by Mr. Big fans. The album is full of honest, distressful, sincere, and humorous lyrics along with memorable vocals, rhythmic beats, guitar and bass riffs. Defying Gravity will be hitting the shelves July 21st this year but you can also grab one of the limited 500 copy deluxe box editions or vinyl set to be released August 18th!

After 50 years, The Moody Blues are as unique and impressive as ever

Imagine this: a world without concept albums. Strange thought, right? Especially considering concept albums are all the rage nowadays (and admittedly they have been for quite some time but c’mon, most kids think concept album and credit American Idiot or The Black Parade or even Beyonce’s take on a visual and conceptual album, Lemonade). Concept albums have a sense of unity — the collection becoming more about a theme, movement, narrative or any artistic media that becomes so much more than just a collection of songs. No one does it better than The Moody Blues who helped shape and define exactly what a concept album is with their release of Days Of Future Passed back in 1967, just months after The Beatles’ own Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

1967. Fifty years ago, The Moody Blues were perfecting the lush, cohesive song cycle and introduction to fusing together a rock band with a full orchestra (later to be credited as one of the first examples of ‘progressive rock’). They were a band ahead of their time, which leaves no surprise that fifty years later, The Moody Blues are still selling out venues and spending their summers celebrating the 50th anniversary of Days Of Future Passed on a full tour, which kicked off this month in California! They played two back-to-back evenings in Saratoga at The Mountain Winery for a trip back to when music was inexplicably great. 

The 50th Anniversary Tour has been one in the making for quite some time. Back in 2015, bassist John Lodge publicly entertained the idea of bringing former band members back to the lineup in any capacity for a series of special shows — an idea that unfortunately seemed to be unable to make happen, but still goes to prove a truly impressive comprehension of the band’s thoughts, ideas and the consideration of what would make this worthy of a 50th year anniversary tour. 

The sentiment is not one that is lost tonight. At only three days into The Moody Blues’ tour, there is a quick and obvious realization to just how special this tour truly is. As fans flood into the Mountain Winery’s beautiful seating, there is a hushed conversation amongst early-birds: “is there an opening band?” Of course, there isn’t. There is no need for one, not tonight. Instead, The Moody Blues played a two-hour, two-part, beautifully crafted set which perfectly reflected the band’s success and the album in celebration. It may have taken Days Of Future Passed approximately five years to reach the top of the charts — but little did they know then that this album would prove to be timeless for decades to come. 

The Moody Blues kicked off the night with a daring challenge. The show opened with their high-energy, fun-loving “I’m Just A Singer.” The first half of the show is scattered with an amazing selection of some of the band’s most beloved hits. They jump around from the ’70’s, ’80’s and ’90’s as they perform songs off their albums of each respective decade: Prelude (1987), Sur La Mer (1988) and Keys Of The Kingdom (1991) an album began with their hit: “Say It With Love,” which when performed tonight, vocalist Justin Hayward doesn’t hold back the affection, paired with the hearts and peace signs floating on stage behind him. For a band that formed back in the psychedelic era — The Moody Blues have something to offer to everyone as they perfected the art of switching from synths and guitar riffs to orchestrated pieces and heavier sounding rock songs and everything in between made evident by their vast range of repertoire which they have no troubles flying through tonight. 

“YEAH! Now we’re getting there! Take us back!” An excited fan screams as the band progresses into their track, “Nervous,” off their early ‘80s album, Long Distance Voyager. Bassist John Lodge can be seen dancing all around the stage before teasing flutist Norda Mullen — who replaced original flutist Ray Thomas quite some years ago and continues to encapsulate the beauty and uniqueness The Moody Blues are known for with having a rock and roll flute player — by mimicking a violinist as scores from an orchestra accompany the band’s set. 

The Moody Blues continue to showcase the unusualness that has always distinctively set them apart, with a complex four-part choral vocal sound paired with a wailing falsetto surging to harmonies (thanks to Lodge’s strong falsetto range, which sounds just as good as it always has, and Hayward’s beautiful voice falling somewhere harmoniously just beneath it). As they perform one of their bigger hits, “Your Wildest Dreams,” for the first time there are several photos splayed across the screen behind them — photos of original members, of days on the road 50 years ago. Nostalgia. And it’s absolutely beautiful. As the crowd sings and dances along, there is a shared inside-look to the band’s life, which helps signify what is about to come. The emotion is nearly palpable as Hayward and Lodge trade off the spotlight on vocals, each of them unable to hide the gratitude and admiration on their faces. They perform beautifully, as the song’s lyrics loosely follow about ‘once upon a times’ and ‘I remembers,’ the old photos of their legacy and time as a band, the three original members expanding this special Anniversary tour to the two members not with them on stage… it is incredibly touching and unlike anything we’ve seen before. The band sing beautifully, too. They achieve their unique sound today with the help of drummer, Graeme Edge as well as Norda Mullen (flutist, guitarist, all around amazing musician), Julie Ragins (singer, keyboardist, saxophonist, amazing musician who also has her own duet project with husband, PEAR), second drummer Billy Ashbaugh (who has toured with several big artists – including Nsync!) and main keyboardist Alan Hewitt (big thanks to Shirley and Pamela for providing these names)! 

The second half of the evening takes on Days as though fans are listening to it for the first time on their record player. The album, which was written as a concept of a day in the life in London, is a beautiful arrangement of songs with the beautiful symphonic presence and a build-up to what remains The Moodies’ signature song, “Nights In White Satin.” 

The second act begins with the Days’ album art dispersing into a rainbow to an image of the world spinning. An orchestra piece is played as we travel around the world — images are shown of The Milky Way behind Stonehenge, to city skylines, starry skies and finally a black and white moon, preluding to the narrated words of “The Day Begins,” which the crowd booms awake to, reciting word-for-word: Cold hearted orb that rules the night, removed the colours from our sight, red is grey and yellow white, but we decide which is right and which is an illusion… 

As the band takes the stage, it has been transformed, showing more than just pictures as it becomes a key element in the storytelling of a day in the life. The Moody Blues return on stage with no gimmicks, instead, they stand as blackened silhouettes in front of beautiful meadows and the rising sun, acoustic guitars in hand: “Dawn is a Feeling.”

An impatient (albeit, probably drunk… it is a winery, after all) crowd member yells “PLAY SOMETHING!” and almost as if on cue, the band erupts from “Another Morning” which displayed a busy London street with colorful panoramic shots of pedestrians speeding by, to the hard hitting “Peak Hour” where Hayward and Lodge both add in amazing solo guitar/bass riffs that probably shut up the ‘play something’ gentleman and more. The Moody Blues still have what it takes to rock ’n’ roll… but Days is a conceptual piece of art… and even a live performance, no, especially the live performance of the album in its entirety deserves to be treated as such. For the record: the band did this wonderfully, blending the downtime with their performance in a way that kept our attention and kept the majority of the crowd ooh and awwing at the beautiful scenery on-screen while bringing to life the interludes present in the album by the London Festival Orchestra. 

There is no question that even the smallest detail was thoroughly thought-out as each of the songs have a perfectly accompanying visual behind them. There are marigolds and cattails swaying in the wind for the ‘Morning’s to deep purples, oranges, and reds for a time-lapse sunset over the ocean during “The Sunset” and primary colors whizzing over train tracks, giving an eery vibe for “Twilight Time.” 

The narration — and which is an illusion? — booms again overhead, putting forth “Late Lament” over what the crowd has been waiting for. The beautiful and timeless “Nights In White Satin” is performed with as much fervor as the studio version recorded over 50 years ago. Hayward shows no signs of struggle during the powerful chorus. The crowd sings along with teary eyes to the promise: “Oh, how I love you,” as nostalgia washes over us all to times of when we first heard this iconic piece and those in our lives who we love just as powerfully as this song entails.

There is an attraction and appreciation that has endured all these years for fans of The Moody Blues. With the band’s performance tonight, someone unfamiliar with their work could argue that they’re still doing a promo tour for the album that has just reached its 50th anniversary. Their songs were hits back in the ‘60s and the following years and remain well-aged and relevant in the present day, in a time where the art of making actual music appears to be getting deleted and somewhat lost with the readily-available sampled beats and noises. 

The crowd roars with applause and cheers for The Moody Blues who have given us an unforgettable performance tonight, one worthy of celebrating the last 50 years and one worthy of celebrating the next 50 years to come.

Lowercase Noises’ new album of nostalgia is pure bliss

The new album from Lowercase Noises “The Swiss Illness” takes you on a serene journey of thorough soft melancholy clouds of emotion and self-reflection.

For those unfamiliar, Lowercase Noises is the moniker for the multi-talented musician, Andy Othling, who has previously released six EPS and three full-length albums prior to The Swiss Illness. Without the aide of management or a label, Othling has managed to bring in over 9 million streaming views on his Youtube channel in the last ten years. Impressive, right? He deserves every single one.

Othling defines his latest record as a conceptual album: the concept was initially more about death but evolved to capture the sense of nostalgia experienced by Swiss mercenaries.

“I wanted this album to be about death, but it didn’t fit. Instead I expanded on the idea of loss and made it about nostalgia, which for me means the loss of things both large and small, both incredibly heavy and largely inconsequential. I experienced all those things in 2016, and as a result the only thing I could create was a minimal, slowly-evolving and (hopefully) beautiful dive into that feeling. Overlaid is the story and history behind the word “nostalgia”, which was coined by doctors studying Swiss mercenaries far away from home and their physical ailments brought on by their feelings.”

With titles such as ” The Last Stage of Consumption”, “From: Habit” to “From: Memories” and closing with “From: A Bitter Grief,” you can’t help but want to try and create your own narrative of who and/or what this story is about. No matter where your imagination takes you, you’ll experience both the feeling as though you’re reflecting on the memories of a lost loved one and a sense of hopefulness for days to come as the album takes you on a journey through it’s soft waves of crescendos and the ethereal, touching ambiance that comes to life with each beautifully composed track.

All Time Low graduate from pop punk to something… more with latest album, Last Young Renegade

Baltimore natives and pop-punk/emo kings have come a long way since the days of “Dear Maria…” The very same boys who once had little more under their belts than covers of Blink 182 and dreams of performing some day with their heroes (check that off the list) are celebrating their latest studio release, Last Young Renegade. 

All Time Low have been promoting their newest album with a special, unique touch of collectible ‘volume’ denim jackets/patches. Their theme has seamlessly transitioned from FUTURE HEARTS to I DON’T BELIEVE IN SAINTS with the simple upside-down turn of their previous logo. 

Last Young Renegade marks the band’s seventh studio album (ninth if you count their two earlier EPs) and their first release on their new label, Fueled By Ramen after having been with Hopeless Records for two bounce-back albums after a comically bad experience of going major label far too early. (Who remembers their stint with Interscope/DGC?)  All Time Low announced their departure from Hopeless Records with the first taste from Last Young Renegade back when they dropped “Dirty Laundry,” though they leave the Hopeless family on completely different terms than when they left Interscope — happily and with a lot of well wishes. It’s easy to see why “Dirty Laundry” became their front-running single, which served as the perfect blend to connect the new with the old. All Time Low are no strangers to the game. This slower tempo untraditional love ballad has everything you’d expect and love from an All Time Low hit: a strong beginning, an infectious chorus and somewhere just before the song ends, things pick up so lead singer, Alex Gaskarth, can belt the lyrics out in a pseudo-yelling falsetto (jokes aside, we really love this track). 

Although, if we could only use a single sentence to describe All Time Low’s latest album, it would be this: All Time Low have grown up… sort of… they seem to be in the Afterglow (see what we did there?). Last Young Renegade is the band’s second go-around with a major label, and dare we say, this time they’ve got things right? The album was produced by a dynamic duo in addition to the band: Nicholas Furlong (who has worked with a number of artists including Blink 182, Steve Aoki, 5 Seconds Of Summer, etc) and Blake Harnage… you remember him, right? Former member of Versaemerge turned producer/singer/songwriting genius. Alongside All Time Low, who have been on the scene for over ten years now, they’ve created something beautiful. The band may have put aside their scene-kid necessities (although guitarist Jack Barakat swapped out his infamous ‘skunk’ hair style from back in the day and has been rocking a red streak for some time now) and embarrassingly bad antics for videos (who remembers their choreographed dance in “Poppin’ Champagne” or Gaskarth’s side-swept bangs and lisp in “Coffee Shop Soundtrack?” Or the ironic, hilarious nature of so many of their videos: “Weightless,” “I Feel Like Dancing,” and even more recently, “Something’s Gotta Give.”) but, All Time Low have been on this path of ‘growing up’ for quite some time now, it just appears that they’ve finally reached wherever they were hoping to get to. 

It shows the most in Last Young Renegade where the band has given us four music videos before the album itself has dropped… and in none of them are the guys decked out in silly furry costumes and there are no strippers or pet monkeys. Color us proud. We knew this day would come, although we didn’t know it would come so soon. 

True to themselves, Last Young Renegade begins on a hard-hitting, high tempo title track. Although as “Last Young Renegade” builds you up, in the same ways their previous introducing songs have in the past (see: “Kicking & Screaming,” “The Reckless And The Brave,” “Do You Want Me (Dead?)” and even “Weightless”), the songs that follow this opening number are like a smooth ride down a very high rollercoaster. 

It isn’t until track number five, “Nice2KnoU” that the record picks up again. We aren’t exactly against this softer, more refined sounding version of All Time Low. After all, 2017 has proved to be the year of change (with the dramatic differences in other artists’ previous work to their newest releases — Twenty One Pilots, Fall Out Boy, Paramore — are you catching that these artists are also on FBR? Hmm…) and we’re just thankful that All Time Low didn’t attempt to ‘experiment’ with an over-saturated sound filled with computer-driven synth beats. That’s not to say they haven’t flirted with synths paired with piano action (see “Drugs & Candy,” and the Tegan and Sara feature “Ground Control.”) but it doesn’t feel overdone or untrue to the band All Time Low is and always have been. Their embrace of these, in addition to modern R&B vibes (“Life Of The Party” and even “Dirty Laundry”) is what will keep All Time Low relevant in a scene where “pop punk” has become washed out and stagnant due to the millions of soundalikes who just want you to listen to their EP on dirty headphones while you’re begrudgingly waiting in that long line for Warped Tour. 

With “Nightmare” comes a vulnerable painted picture of a man as Gaskarth sings about telling himself he wouldn’t be scared and still facing nightmares. The track is a showcase for Gaskarth’s unique vocal range, his ability to go from a grainy/raspy sound to refine, crisp, clean. He has come a long way since The Party Scene and saying we’re proud is a definite understatement. 

Even though the album is missing that goofiness that became a staple for All Time Low in the past (and we’re sure, Barakat will still happily accept your sweaty bras on stage), the seriousness of their new sound is a breath of fresh air. Of course, if you were a fan of the loud, in your face chorus and riffs off of the band’s Dirty Work and Don’t Panic, you may find yourself a bit disappointed with All Time Low’s somewhere-in-the-middle transition from the old to the new, pop-driven trend that so many seem to be struggling with to escape. But for fans like myself who are also facing the trials and tribulations of having to grow up, the maturity and honesty in their latest album is something easy to accept as we all seem to be coming to that point of change and the mixed emotions that come hand-in-hand. Trust us — give the album a second chance, let it sit, come back to it. You’ll see that the same four guys are underneath these tracks, which may be the truest to themselves thus far. How can you hate the absolute gem that is the closing track, “Afterglow” which takes on an ‘80s jungle vibes, pairing Gaskarth’s tone with the bright talent of each musician in the band (we see you Rian Dawson and Zack Merrick, don’t think you were forgotten) in a track that you may have expected from the likes of Third Eye Blind meets fun. Trust us. It’s amazing, and if you allow this track to close out the album as intended, you too will be caught up in the Afterglow that All Time Low has created.

Last Young Renegade is a story of self-realization. A collection of songs written from the perspective of the other side of the mirror. In writing this record, I delved into all of the different versions of me that other people might have met over the years, through the ups and downs, in the public eye and behind closed doors.
I gave those other sides of me a persona, and a name, and The Last Young Renegade was born. It became a symbol for those characters and allowed me to comfortably write about some things that I’m not as comfortable talking about openly. This is a very personal record, our favorite that we’ve written. We hope you enjoy the album as much as we do. Thank you for being along for this journey with us.

Bay Area…. get ready for JUNE!

Hey BAY AREA! Are you guys ready for June? So many amazing shows and festivals are happening this month: starting off with the Colossal Clusterfest in San Francisco THIS weekend! And who could forget Live 105’s BFD kicking off mid-June on the 10th at Shoreline! To wrap up the month will be the FIRST EVER ID10T Festival created and hosted by Chris Hardwick, which brings together music, comedy, comics, video games, pop culture and so much more for one forgettable weekend on the 24th and 25th. Festival season is officially here! You may have thought you missed out with the kick off of Coachella and the recently wrapped up BottleRock, but never fear! There are so many amazing events you won’t want to miss out on happening in June alone! 

First, the Colossal Clusterfest will be starting the month off! Happening THIS weekend, the 2nd to the 4th at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. What can you expect from something called the CLUSTERFEST? 50+ Comedians and a whole bunch of bands filling up 5 Stages! 

You can explore the worlds of some of your most beloved comedies: South Park, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Seinfeld… enjoy acts from some incredibly funny people: Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Sarah Silverman, Chris Hardwick, Hasan Minhaj… and so many more. Plus the BANDS! Musical acts include Ice Cube, Tegan and Sara, Lil Dicky, Vince Staples and we’re just getting started.

There will also be a ton of activities including a Drunk History Dunk Tank, a Cuervo Tequila Bar, Mystery Pizza boxes, a Paint-By-Number Wall and plenty more to keep you occupied all weekend. What are you waiting for? A limited number of tickets are still available!

Up next is the beloved BFD from the Bay’s very own Live 105. If you’re unfamiliar, the BFD is held every year at Shoreline Amphitheater and put on by our local radio station ever since June of 1994. Last year’s headliners for BFD included The Offspring, Fitz and The Tantrums, Silversun Pickups and so many more… this year, the line-up only gets better!

Happening ONE DAY ONLY: BFD will take place on Saturday, June 10th. Four stages will span over the Shoreline – including the Main Stage for headliners including headliners Phoenix, Franz Ferdinand, Cold War Kids, Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness. The Bud Light Festival Stage will have performances from Taking Back Sunday, New Politics, Highly Suspect, SWMRS and so much more… trickling down to the Subsonic Tent and the Local Band Stage for a day jammed-pack with fun.

Who can forget this year’s first ever ID10T Festival created and hosted by Chris Hardwick! This music/pop culture/media/comedy ultra-mash-up for us nerds will be closing out the month of June happening on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th also at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

The ID10T Festival is the first ever of it’s kind. Bringing together all forms of media with comedy acts, comic books, video games, pop culture and of course: music. Where else can you see Weezer perform one minute and the next see a live taping of Chris Hardwick’s very own Nerdist podcast. As well as comedy performances by Demetri Martin, Nikki Glaser, Michael Che and so much more hosted both days by April Richardson. Special guests will include artists and creators such as Wil Wheaton, Fred Armisen, John C McGinley and really, we’re just getting started.
